All the above define Africa in many books, poems, films etc. I love the definitions because, yes, we are all that; from our deathtrap roads, thatch and mud houses, tottering infrastructure, clay and gourd utensils to emaciated children, tattered mothers and miserable fathers who work on putrid marshlands, drought, famine, mosquitoes and especially our blackness…and the list goes on-and-on.

Finding gold on a journey doesn’t mean every glittering stone on the way is gold. It could be diamond, any other gem, glass or probably just a mere stone. Humans are too quick to brand things; a gift from God to Adam passed on to us. Now, I say our branding abilities are corrupted and all we do is stereotype!

Today, I saw an argument on facebook and I couldn’t stop myself from laughing: There was a picture of Omotola, the actress and its caption described the beauty of an African woman. There was this nurse who strongly held to her view that the picture was just a bad influence to ‘true Africans’ because Omotola is fair in complexion and her picture only preached pro-skin bleaching and not appropriate for the Ad on African beauty.

As much as I do not agree with skin bleaching, I didn’t agree with the nurse either. I mean what about the purebreds that are naturally fair, just like Omotola or even white children born on African soil?

Everything is not what it seems but it also seems we Africans have accepted the definition created for us by our ‘superiors’.

It is time our writers and filmmakers and artists, newsmen took pens in their own hands and began to tell the stories from our perspective. Eliminate the clichés and whitewash the stereotypes. Let’s tell and show the world what we want them to see, not how they choose to see us.

We too we are somebody!

HORRID HORRID BUS-SYNCING!!!

           More than half of the people I encounter regularly, either sitting in front, behind or beside me in buses are very much aware of my unbreakable pact with lip-syncing. I mostly have my earpiece plugged in anytime I board a bus. My mouth barely opens with a high pitched tiny voice that fascinates the majority. Others also stare in disgust whiles others just seem not to care. I just love my bus audiences just the same way I love and can’t do without slow music. I don’t find it embarrassing to sing in a bus at all but…hmm…what happened today…I was ashamed. I still am, at the thought of it.

          So I got on a bus today before this guy, I know nothing about, got on. He kept peeking at me the whole time after he saw me looking through the polythene bag of concealers I had bought for my make-up tutorial. He sat in the backseat right behind my row, two seats away from me.

          It was very hot and it seemed to me it was taking forever for the bus to get full although it was just four people short. The only thing that soothed me was the thought of me doing old age make-up for the first time, well, until this guy brought out an Iphone or note pad, I’m not sure, and plugged in his earpiece. It was then I remembered that my earpiece was around my neck all the time and I could soothe myself with some slow songs but I didn’t bother. I have no idea why I snubbed that idea but I owe much thanks to whatever made me because it has given me an article to share.

         ‘Onyε aye sò’; this came from behind me and immediately, it spark some disgust in me and made me turn to look at the culprit who had just used the popular Ga phrase, the famous Ghanaian swearword. Guess who it was…oh, it wasn’t the uncouth, scrawny, dirty ‘mate’ this time, it was the peeking, neatly dressed, iphone or whatever it was guy with the earpiece in his ears. ‘Onyε aye sò’! It came again a few seconds after the first one…then a third time…then a fourth!

         Was he hearing himself?! I had had enough so I just shook my head in shame looked at him again and turned to face my front. No one reacted to the vulgar he was singing. Did they not notice or they just didn’t care? Oh did I forget to mention, he was actually singing a Ghanaian ‘hit’ with the chorus being a repetition of the vulgar language? Yeah, he was! Whoever made this song must be such a great mentor and inspiration to the young…irony!!!

I’m not sure I’ll ever meet that guy again but if I do, I doubt I’d remember him and if I do, I’m not sure I can accord him with a speck of respect. Please, people, watch what inspires you because it could be the very muse sucking morals out of you.

         I am done with lip-syncing in a bus…ahem…for now.
